Dictionary editing

April 5th, 2006

I’m interested in knowing how many people would like full featured dictionary editing capabilities.  I know it is one of the more popular requests that I get, especially the ability to edit definitions.

How do other programs handle this?  I do worry about not losing peoples data on dictionary updates, etc.  Please let me know if you want your opinion heard.  I’m ready to tackle the issue. :)

    Some quick points
    1. I would prefer to just be able to edit categories items rather than dictionary entries. As is rare for the dictionary not to contain the definition I’m looking for.
    2. I think that a script to separate the Dictionary from the categories would be a good idea. Each char in the category references the dictionary until its definition is changed. I think I wrote a quick solution into the feature request that doesn’t actually involve splitting items.
    3. Maybe you could contact the ADSO guys and have an option that if someone adds an entry it submits it to the dictionary for confirmation then it could be added.

I belive I put my “case” in the sourceforge database, but to sumarize (for other readers, perhaps), I would implement it as a separate “user” database. Actually, I’d allow multiple databases (like Wakan), and have a dialog which selected the dictionary files to search.

I find a LOT of words that are missing, or have a different meaning than the textbook one I’m focusing on. I’m using the CeDict, rather than the Adsotrans database, but I’d like to be able to use both at the same time too.

I assume the sql engine can execute a simple Union query for each of the databases.
