Revamping the Self Review Test
August 1st, 2007
I’m currently making a couple of requested changes to the Self Review Test. First, you’ll now be able to select any combination of attributes (character, pinyin, definition) to display at one time. Second, you will now be able to manually score yourself on the test by selecting whether you know or don’t know the answer. My question to you all about the second feature is whether this should be a preference or the new default. Do people like not scoring themselves for the Self Review Test? Please share your thoughts.
Here are some preliminary screenshots to describe what I’m talking about.

Re: manually scoring yourself.
What happens if you mark it correct vs wrong? Does it just keep track? Or does it affect which ones are shown?
If ones marked “correct” are not shown again, maybe this should be more explicit with “Know it!” and “Show me again!”. [It might also be useful to have a "show me later" middle ground, for works I kinda know but still want to be asked later. Not sure if it's worth the complexity.]
Jeff
P.S. I like the new flashcards, I was actually thinking of suggesting exactly that!

I would like to be able to clear my search history in the dictionary in ZDT.

Hey !
This is Ruidianren2 from the Chinese-Forums.
This looks great ! I cant wait to try it
Although, I think it would be better if it was a preference and not a deafault. Personally I like it but there might be some people that doesnt and it’s always better to give everyone a chance to choose for them selves!
Again, it looks really great. Please make it so that there are “quick keys” (or whatever its called) for Correct and wrong, so you can save time and not have to fumble with mouse on every card.
Thanks

@Jeff – It currently works the way the other flashcard modes do. Correct ones are not shown again, and wrong ones are. I will keep your suggestion of alternate labels under consideration, but I’ll just let people try it for now and see whether it’s a big deal or not.
@Ruidianren – I just added keybindings for them. Currently they are ‘C’ and ‘W’. But that could change if the labels are changed.

I say make it the default. The point is to be able to control which card will appear more often. Just like Jeff said, I would call it “know it” vs. “show it again”.

This is a great and eagerly anticipated feature! I think the scoring should be set to “on” as the default because I imagine most people will be using this new mode to test whether they can write the character or not. Users should still be able to disable scoring, though, for learning new characters and review.
BTW, I’ve been using zdt for about a month, and I’ve promised myself to make a donation as soon as this important feature is implemented. Think of it as an incentive…

Actually I was using Anki until now and I love the fact that you choose for yourself the degree of certainty. I find it a great idea to have other degrees except correct, wrong such as “Don’t ask how, but I feel I can remember this for the next week at least” or “I got it correct but I want to see it soon again”
Of course I know this is somewhat “bypassing” the scoring system, but in general I think it’s more efficient to allow user-feedback, fine-tune automated results…
keep up the gr8 work!
